Juniper Networks PTX Series packet transport switches are designed for the converged supercore. These systems are the first supercore packet switches in the industry, and deliver powerful capabilities based on innovative silicon and forwarding architecture that is focused on optimizing MPLS and Ethernet. PTX Series packet transport switches deliver several critical core functionalities and capabilities, including game changing density and scalability, cost optimization, high availability and network simplification. They can readily adapt to today’s rapidly changing traffic patterns for video, mobility and cloud-based services.

PTX Series Packet Transport switches are based on Juniper’s patented Express chipset. Express uses state-of-the-art 40nm fabrication technology and is built with a “no packet drop” assurance. The PTX Series is designed to scale up to 2Tbps per slot and provide significant cost reduction over traditional core transport solutions.

The PTX Series switches provide a unique combination of hardware and software features that allow service providers to manage their supercore network more efficiently because the platforms are built from ground up for speed, scale and cost optimization. They are the first supercore packet switches in the Industry, and support a single chassis with 8 and 16 Tbps capacity. The modular power design allows power efficiency in the order of 1 watts per Gbps per line rate port.

A PTX Series switch working in conjunction with a T Series core router allows a service provider to build a core network that is flexible enough to accommodate the dynamic needs of the network today: cloud-delivered services, mobility for devices and users, and bandwidth-intensive applications such as HD video.

Feature Description Benefit
System capacity PTX5000 scales to 384 10GbE interfaces, 32 100GbE interfaces, and 32 40GbE interfaces in a single chassis. The architecture is designed to scale beyond 2 Tbps per slot.
PTX9000 scales to 768 10GbE interfaces, 64 40GbE interfaces, and 64 100GbE interfaces in a single chassis. The architecture is designed to scale beyond 2 Tbps per slot.
PTX Series scalability, performance and density allows the service provider to increase the capacity without expanding their network and facility footprint.
High availability hardware Fully redundant hardware (cooling, power supply, routing engines, control board and SIB). High availability (HA) is critical for the service provider supercore which carries all the service provider traffic.
High availability software Resilient operating system that supports GRES, NSR and ISSU for high availability. PTX supports game changing 50 ms redundancy switchover under load. The software supports HA features that allow software upgrades and changes without disrupting the traffic.
Unparalleled packet processing scale Enabled by new silicon innovation, the PTX series deliver an unparalleled packet processing capability of 600 Mpps per slot defining the architecture of the service provider supercore and the dynamics of service delivery. The superior packet processing capabilities help alleviate the challenge of scaling the network to increase in traffic while reducing the cost of service delivery with a high performance, simplified and cost optimized architecture.
