Juniper Networks High-Performance Networking Infrastructure to Power "SCinet" at SC08 Conference

Juniper to Partner with Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) to Carry 40 Gbps Traffic from "Ranger" Supercomputer to TACC Booth on Show Floor

Juniper to Showcase New SRX Services Gateway, Industry's First Dynamic Services Architecture and Extensible Networking and Security Solution

SUNNYVALE, Calif., and AUSTIN, TX, — November 14, 2008 — Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: JNPR), the leader in high-performance networking, today announced its participation in SC08, the premier international conference for high-performance computing (HPC), networking, storage and analysis. At SC08 from November 15–21, 2008 in Austin, TX, Juniper is extending a nine-year tradition of providing high-performance routers used in the real-time networks tapped by researchers and attendees at SC conferences.

At the 2008 conference, Juniper will deploy its industry-leading T1600 core routers at the Network Operations Center (NOC), powering the SC08 SCinet, one of the most powerful networks in the world. Built each year by volunteers from universities, government and industry, SCinet provides a highly sophisticated and extreme networking infrastructure that can support the revolutionary applications and network experiments that have become the trademark of the SC Conference.

SCinet will also incorporate additional Juniper high-performance network infrastructure, including EX-series Ethernet switches, MX-series Ethernet Services routers and the M-series multiservice edge routers. These and other Juniper solutions are in increasing demand throughout the Research and Education (R&E) community to enable large-bandwidth, high-speed research and secure information sharing.

At its booth (843) on the Exhibit Hall floor, Juniper will be showcasing the new SRX Services Gateways, based on the revolutionary Dynamic Services Architecture, representing a new category of extensible "no compromise" networking and security products. The SRX Services Gateways represent the highest performing solution supporting up to 120 Gbps firewall throughput while integrating Intrusion Prevention Systems, DoS protection, virtual routers, QoS, and other networking and security features.

Juniper will also partner with the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) to bring live research traffic at 40 Gigabits per second (Gbps) from "Ranger," the most powerful supercomputing system in the world for open science research, to the SC08 Conference floor. Hosted at the University of Texas at Austin and offering 579 teraflops at peak performance, Ranger is five times more capable than any open-science computer available to the national science community. Visitors to the TACC booth (2103) will see high-speed flows of live research data arrive at the TACC SC08 network, and then be routed to various media (computers, storage media) in an ongoing demonstration of high-speed, real-time research throughout the conference.

Juniper is also partnering with Stanford University, Internet2, and other industry leaders in OpenFlow, a proof-of-concept prototype being demonstrated by Stanford personnel at the Internet2 booth (943) at SC08. OpenFlow allows researchers, network operators, users and 3rd party developers to test new ways to manage traffic without impacting current network operations.

OpenFlow is an open standard that allows researchers to run experimental protocols on production networks. "This allows researchers to add new routing protocols, create new access controls, and experiment with more efficient ways to manage network performance and energy consumption—as just a few examples," said Nick McKeown, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Stanford University.

In implementing OpenFlow on its MX-series routers, Juniper Incubation Labs used the tools and resources available in Juniper's Partner Solutions Development Platform (PSDP), which includes Juniper's Software Development Kit. The PSDP enables customers and partners to build specialized applications on JUNOS® software, Juniper's single network operating system. Juniper Incubation Labs partners with the world's R&E community and other Juniper subject matter experts to speed market adoption of emerging technologies.

About SC08

SC08, sponsored by the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) and the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Scalable Computing and the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Computer Architecture, will showcase how high performance computing, networking, storage and analysis lead to advances in research, education and commerce. This premiere international conference includes technical and education programs, workshops, tutorials, an exhibit area, demonstrations and hands-on learning.
