Service providers rely on high-performance, reliable applications running in data centres throughout their infrastructures to deploy rich, interactive services. With the advent of cloud services, these data centres have become increasingly crucial parts of the operator's service delivery platforms, whether in mobile, fixed, or Internet-based applications.

Interconnecting a growing number of virtual and physical devices as well as linking multiple data centres and the WAN can be a daunting task. Complexity and cost increase exponentially as more devices are added and more locations are linked. Applying the principles of cloud computing with a network fabric can help service providers overcome these obstacles.

A successful large-scale cloud data centre network must do four things:

  • simplify
  • share
  • secure
  • automate

Juniper Networks helps service providers simplify their cloud data centre network with Virtual Chassis fabric technology, an industry-leading product portfolio, and solution modules to reduce the total cost of ownership and provide elasticity.

With Juniper's "3-2-1" data centre network architecture, multiple switching tiers are collapsed, leading to a new simplified design that requires fewer devices and interconnections. "Security sprawl" is consolidated into fewer highly scalable dynamic security services platforms. Advanced routing capabilities enhance application performance and agility.

All of these functions leverage a common operating system with an open network automation platform. This makes it easier to manage and administer the data centre network, accelerating application deployments and increasing efficiencies in space, power, cooling, and management.

Solution Components

Switching

  • QFX Series Switches: The foundation of Juniper Networks QFabric family of products is the QFX Series —a revolutionary approach that delivers quantum leap improvements in data centre performance, operating costs, and business agility, for enterprises, high-performance computing systems and large-scale cloud providers. The QFX Series implements a single-tier network in the data centre, enabling exponential improvements in speed, scale and efficiency by removing legacy barriers and improving business agility.

The QFX Series includes two product lines:

    • Composed of three separate componentsQFabric Node, QFabric Interconnect and QFabric Director the QFX3000 creates a high-performance, ultra-low latency fabric network that unleashes the full power of the data centre. The QFabric Node acts as the entry and exit into the fabric; the QFabric Interconnect is the high-speed transport device for interconnecting QFabric Nodes; and the QFabric Director provides control and management services to deliver a common window for managing all devices as a single device.
    • The QFX3500 is a standalone 48-port 10GbE top-of-rack switch with four 40GbE uplink ports and Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) and FC gateway functionality. With a simple software and configuration change, the QFX3500 can also become part of a QFX3000 switch, providing the QFabric Node functionality in the QFabric architecture.
  • EX Series Ethernet Switches The EX Series Ethernet Switches deliver unmatched scale and performance for L2 and L3 data centre networks. The high-density, high-performance EX8200 modular switches support data centre and cloud computing environments While the EX4200 and EX4500 switches with Virtual Chassis fabric technology work together in top-of-rack deployments to support a mix of 1GbE and 10GbE ports. Virtual Chassis technology allows multiple interconnected switches to operate as a single device, reducing management overhead.

Routing

  • M Series Multiservice Edge Routers Combine best-in-class integrated virtualisation and traffic management with unmatched reliability, stability, security, and service richness to connect the cloud-ready data centre to the WAN.
  • MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers A family of high-performance Ethernet services routers with powerful switching and security features that delivers the most advanced routing features as well as the ability to scale functionality without compromising performance. Advanced routing features include MPLS network virtualisation, low latency multicast, advanced QoS, carrier-class reliability, and security. MX Series routers are designed for future support of Juniper's unique Virtual Chassis technology, which will enable multiple interconnected MX Series routers to operate as a single device to simplify manageability.

Security

  • SRX Series Services Gateways Combine routing, switching, application services, and user- and application-aware security within a modular, expandable chassis to deliver unprecedented performance and flexibility while reducing management overhead.
  • vGW Series Secures the virtual data centre and cloud computing environments in real-time through high-performance, hypervisor-based stateful firewall, virtual network visibility and monitoring, and reporting. Enforces a granular virtualised security policy consistent and integrated with physical server security, and automatically invokes policy enforcement as VMs change and move, all with zero VM host capacity drain.

Junos Platform

  • Junos Pulse A dynamic, standards-based multiservice network client that drastically simplifies user experiences by delivering integrated connectivity, access, application acceleration, and security.
  • Junos Space A suite of applications for network infrastructure automation including:
    • Junos Space Ethernet Design — Helps deploy an entire network just as easily as a single switch.
    • Junos Space Network Activate — Allows for full lifecycle management of MPLS services, and quick and easy set-up of VPLS services.
    • Junos Space Route Insight — Enables rapid planning, troubleshooting, and change simulation for L3 services.
    • Junos Space Service Now — Automates diagnostics to speed problem resolution.
    • Junos Space Service Insight — Delivers proactive, actionable network insight to manage risk and improve application reliability.
    • Junos Space Security Design — Enables bulk configuration and provisioning of complex security policies.
    • Junos Space Virtual Control — provides access and visibility into the virtual network and automated orchestration between the physical and virtual networks for server virtualization deployments.

Network Operating System

  • Junos OS Integrates routing, switching, and security services to reduce complexity, achieve operational excellence, and deliver dynamic services with lower TCO.

Network Management

  • Network and Security Manager (NSM) Provides a single pane of management for the entire network infrastructure, including routing, switching, and security devices.
  • STRM Series Security Threat Response Managers: Collect events and alerts from different Juniper and third-party products and aggregate them in order to provide an organisation-wide threat management view.

Technical Services

  • Juniper Technical Services: is a family of services that protects your investment in your high-performance network while increasing operational effectiveness and lowering operational cost. The services combine Juniper's service automation technology to increase productivity, reduce risk and increase network uptime by automating diagnostics and reducing time-to-resolution (TTR). This industry leading innovation increases operational efficiency by allowing your staff to concentrate on running the business, not fixing the equipment. By adding to these features an expert level of interaction with senior Juniper technical support engineers, Juniper Technical Services provide for extremely effective troubleshooting and service restoration resulting in higher availability.
