Juniper Networks Introduces the Next-Generation Service-Aware Core Network

New Multi-Terabit T1600 Raises the Bar in Performance, Scale, Service Control; Will Provide Superior Investment Protection

SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 11, 2007–Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: JNPR), the leader in high-performance networking, today announced the newest member of the T-series family, the T1600 core router. Capable of delivering an industry-leading 1.6 Tbps of throughput in a single half-rack chassis, the service-aware T1600 core router will ease the transition to next-generation networks and enable service providers to accelerate the deployment of the experience-based services that subscribers expect today with the agility and service control to address future requirements. Building upon more than a decade of core routing innovation, the Juniper Networks T1600 will offer unparalleled scalability and service richness and will provide superior investment protection.

"As we accelerate the build-out of our 21st Century Next Generation Network and transition to an IP-based world where services are applications, we're empowering end-users with control, choice and flexibility like never before," said Matt Bross, BT Group Chief Technology Officer. "The new Juniper T1600 multi-terabit core router will allow us to increase network capacity in line with escalating service demands without adding incremental systems to the network so that we can speed new service deployment, deliver a superior end-user experience and maximize our existing T-series investments to meet our cost transformation objectives."

Scale Breakthrough Enables Lower Total Cost of Ownership

Designed for multi-chassis deployments, the T1600 can scale to deliver up to 3.2 Tbps of throughput in a single standard 7-foot rack, more than twice the density of competitive platforms. As the industry's most energy efficient router, the T1600 consumes 30 percent less power and requires 30 percent less cooling than competitive platforms, delivering operational excellence and helping to reduce total cost of ownership.

Agility, Investment Protection and Service Control

Juniper remains fully committed to continually investing in and enhancing the T-series to enable service providers to keep pace with escalating business requirements, while controlling costs as they scale. By leveraging the widely-deployed JUNOS operating system and sharing components with existing T-series routers, the T1600 will offer a unique, seamless upgrade path for T640 routers. Upgrading a T640 to a T1600 takes as little as 90 minutes and can be performed without service interruption.

"The core router market is poised to enter a new growth phase, driven principally by service provider requirements to support rapid growth of IPTV and Internet video services," said Mark Bieberich, vice president, Enabling Technologies, Service Provider Infrastructure Solutions at Yankee Group. "In anticipation of this surge in demand, it is important for core router vendors to extend the product lifecycle, reach new scalability thresholds and provide low-cost, non-disruptive upgrades for deployed systems. Juniper meets these requirements with the introduction of the T1600."

The T1600 features the JUNOS operating system, delivering high-feature velocity on a timely and predictable quarterly release schedule. Juniper's disciplined software development practice eases the ongoing burden on network administrators, can lower operating costs and enables consistent operations throughout the network, offering scale without disruption. All JUNOS features are supported on the T1600, including recently introduced point-to-multipoint (P2MP) MPLS capabilities for efficient core video distribution and continuous improvements in optical network integration, as well as 10GE optical interfaces and 40 Gbps interface cards that deliver exceptional interoperability and service agility over optical transport and IP infrastructures.

As with all Juniper routers, the T1600 is fully policy-enabled and managed through the recently announced Session Resource Control (SRC) product family. This pioneering approach maximizes service control and speeds the deployment of multiplay applications such as video on demand (VoD) and broadcast video, as well as many other solutions including Fixed Mobile Convergence and IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS).

"Innovation has been the hallmark of Juniper's success throughout our history and the T1600 represents the pinnacle of more than a decade of engineering commitment and investment," said Kim Perdikou, executive vice president, Infrastructure Products Group and general manager, Service Provider Business Team. "With the T1600 we will be delivering high performance at double the scale with reliability across the service-aware, next-generation core that accelerates multi-service and revenue opportunities for our customers. Our ability to provide a non-disruptive and cost-effective upgrade path from the T640 to the T1600 will reduce both time to revenue and expenses with an agile, open and customizable solution optimized for next-generation networks."

The T1600 core router is expected to be generally available for deployment in Q407.
