In order to achieve their revenue goals, network operators are under intense pressure to offer compelling new services and to streamline their infrastructure and operations environments. Unfortunately, traditional service delivery requires a complex combination of physically and logically independent routers and service-specific appliances. In this model, new service introductions mean new vendors, equipment and operational processes in a complex, time consuming and expensive process that delays time to revenue, increases operational risk and cost, and slows the pace of service innovation.

Juniper Networks Service Delivery Gateway, or SDG, is designed to help wireline, mobile and cable operators network overcome these challenges by tightly integrating service enabling applications with the Junos Operating System and MX 3D Series Universal Edge Routers. Hosting applications directly on the MX Series eliminates service specific appliances and their related inefficiencies and greatly reduces design and testing complexity.

The Service Delivery Gateway

The Router Integrated Application Portfolio

Juniper Networks Service Delivery Gateway, or SDG, is designed help wireline, mobile and cable operators quickly and efficiently implement new services by tightly integrating service enabling applications with the Junos Operating System and MX 3D Series Universal Edge Routers.

The SDG for Wireline Service Providers

Wireline network operators often deploy multiple service specific appliances to support a variety of services at the broadband edge, including Carrier-Grade NAT (CGN), firewall, intrusion prevention services, load balancing, MPLS VPNs, switching and routing.

The Service Delivery Gateway consolidates these services on the MX Series Universal Edge Router, and by chaining multiple services together and provisioning them in the SDG eliminates costs associated with space, power and cooling as well as the layers of management required to control the appliances and services.

The SDG can be implemented to provide service aggregation and treatment to Broadband Network Gateways; alternatively, if when MX Series routers are deployed as BNGs, the SDG can be implemented on the same router via a simple software upgrade, which further reduces service risk, cost, and time to market.

The SDG for Mobile Network Operators

Today, mobile network operators deploy a variety of GI networks to support laptop dongles, feature phones, smartphones, and of course enterprises. The GI networks typically require services such as Carrier-Grade NAT (CGN), firewall, intrusion prevention service, load balancing, video optimization, MPLS VPNs, switching and routing; services that are usually performed by a long chain of service specific appliances.

The Service Delivery Gateway consolidates these services into a single gateway, allowing multiple services to be performed on a single pass through the MX Series Universal Edge Router. Chaining multiple services together and provisioning them in a single gateway reduces rack space, power and cooling demands, simplifies network management, and eliminates lots of cabling. Fewer appliances reduces the number of points of failure, which increases service resiliency.

The SDG for Cable Operators

Today, cable operators use DOCSIS to provision subscriber services, and transport these services over IP/MPLS infrastructure. While it is possible to apply service treatment at the flow level, it is much more difficult to apply granular, subscriber specific service treatment to flows traversing the IP/MPLS network.

To date, Cable operators have widely implemented the Service Delivery Gateway in Carrier Grade NAT and IPv6 co-existence applications, with integrated firewall services. Additionally, the SDG can provide ‘DOCSIS aware’ service treatment to traffic, opening the door to new services—and service revenue!.

Application Delivery Controller

The Application Delivery Controller delivers the intelligent traffic balancing today’s rich media services require. The ADC efficiently balances traffic across network resources to maximize service performance, ensure quality of experience, and improve service availability.

Compressed Real-Time Transport Protocol (CRTP)

CRTP significantly increases network resource efficiency by reducing the overhead for voice packets and by reducing the latency related to serialization, enabling quality VoIP services over low speed links.

Next Generation Network Addressing

A portfolio of high-performance IPv4 address exhaustion avoidance, IPv4/IPv6 co-existence and IPv6 transition technologies that provide enterprises and service providers with flexible and effective implementation options.

Dynamic Application Awareness

This sophisticated service identifies applications as they traverse the network, enabling tight control over network resources and allowing highly differentiated service offerings, including new revenue generating services based on HTTP error-redirection and URL filtering.

Dynamic Subscriber Awareness

Dynamic Subscriber Awareness permits differentiated services based on subscriber policy, ensures adherence to SLAs, and enables subscriber/application fairness; and the identification of subscriber traffic patterns and statistics supports marketing and service optimization tasks.

Intrusion Prevention System (IPS)

IPS delivers Juniper Networks' latest and most advanced security features, and protects the network and services from a wide range of threats and attacks.

IPsec

Juniper’s IPsec software uses a variety of standard encryption techniques to secure network communications between the customer premise and the network edge, to add security to traffic over L3 VPNs and to enhance end user security.

Link Services

A variety of protocols that provide the cost-effective aggregation and bundling of Frame Relay links as well as distinct quality of service (QoS) treatment for bundled MLPPP links.

Network Monitoring

A variety of applications that monitor traffic at the flow, department, or application level for customer billing or interdepartmental charge back purposes, provide usage statistics for capacity and traffic engineering tasks, and assist in tracking security violations and CALEA applications.

Stateful Firewall

Our router integrated Stateful Firewall provides the first line of defense in a layered security architecture and efficiently offload bulk stateful filtering from external firewalls; it can also support a revenue generating managed security service.

StreamScope eRM

This comprehensive MPEG monitoring and analysis application helps network operators assure and improve video service availability and quality.

Tunnel Services

Juniper’s tunnel service software support a wide variety of encapsulation schemes to ensure efficient traffic distribution and communications over a variety of network architectures.
